Join us on Saturday April 19th, Easter Holiday Weekend 2014 as we retrace the footsteps of St. Declan over the scenic Knockmealdown Mountains on the border of Tipperary and Waterford. St. Declan’s Way is an ancient pilgrimage route linking the 5th century monastery of St. Declan in Ardmore, County Waterford with Cashel in County Tipperary.

To mark the inaugural National Pilgrim Paths Day, Knockmealdown Active is organising a walk along part of the route on Saturday, April 19th. The group will assemble in Mount Melleray, then taking the provided busses to Goatenbridge, Co. Tipperary where the walk will commence. Having crossed the Knockmealdown Mountains behind Newcastle the walk will finish at the Cistercian monastery of Mount Mellary Abbey on the southern slopes of the Knockmealdown Mountains. The walk will follow the path below:

Walk details:

Distance: The Goatenbridge to Mellary walk is 17 km long and will take about 4 hours to complete. It involves a height ascension of 604 metres over the Knockmealdown Mountains.

Time: The walk will commence at 11 am on Saturday April 19th 2014 in Goatenbridge. Walkers will assemble at Mount Melleray Abbey, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, from where they will get a bus to  Goatenbridge, Co. Tipperary – departing at 10am. Please allow plenty of time before the bus departs (booking is in advance, please see below). The walkers will then take the route from Goatenbridge, via Newcastle to Mount Melleray, where their cars are parked.

Walkers should have appropriate footwear (preferrably walking boots) and waterproof gear.  Walk leaders will be on hand on the day.

Cost: €15 which covers walk leaders and bus transfer from Mount Melleray back to Goatenbridge. Participants must bring any meals, snacks and drinks they require during the event. There is a Café in Mount Melleray where walkers can purchase refreshments on their return.

Note: Booking Closes at 6pm on Friday April 18th so that we can calculate numbers for bus transport.
