Maps of the Knockmealdown Mountains

Hi all, remember that your mental and physical health are equally important. If you need to take a break with/without the family, just remember that we have a fabulous resource on our doorstep – The wonderful Knockmealdown Mountains of South Tipperary.

For anybody unfamiliar with the Knockmealdown Mountains, there are:

  • eight (8) waymarked looped walks and
  • one (1) 32km linear walk from Ballyporeen to Newcastle

all of these routes are off-road along very walkable forest tracks.

While people might be familiar with the trailhead in Goatenbridge (which accesses the Liam Lynch & Knockballiniry loops) or the picnic site in Kilballyboy woods (outside Clogheen on the Vee Road), as places to start their walks, the mountains can also be accessed from Ballyporeen, Shanrahan, Clogheen, Loughglenbridge, Croon, Newcastle and a variety of other sites.

If you are unsure of these areas, or unsure of the mountain tracks and trails, get yourself a copy of Barry Dalby’s incredibly detailed maps (1:25,000 scale) of the Knockmealdown Mountains. These are be available in some local shops. If you can’t get a copy, or if you are not from the area, get in touch with EastWest Mapping (https://www.eastwestmapping.ie) and they’ll send you on a copy.

You can also run these maps on your digital devices (iOS or Android) by downloading the ‘EastWest Maps’ App from either of these operating systems’ app stores.
